Injectable Double Chin Removal Treatments in Toronto

Submental fat, also known as a “double chin,” is a condition caused by a small layer of resistant fat or extra skin below the chin that can be frustrating for many people. It can make them appear older or heavier than they actually are. Men and women of all ages can have this condition. Although it is sometimes caused by weight gain, even people who are slim and healthy can still have a double chin. In the past, surgery was the only option for treating this problem. Minimally invasive injectable treatments have become increasingly popular for softening wrinkles and now they are also available for removing stubborn fat beneath the chin. Belkyra at Toronto’s Avebelle Cosmetic Clinic is the first and only injectable treatment that reduces fat between the jawline and neck, for a sleeker, sculpted appearance.

What Causes a Double Chin?

Double chins often occur due to excess fat, so they could be a sign of weight gain. When weight gain occurs, it happens evenly all over the body including on the face.

However, genetics and loose or sagging skin may also cause a double chin. Due to genetics, some people have a receding or weak chin and jawline because of a poorly developed bone structure. The lack of projection on the chin and jaw area makes any small deposit of fat or decrease in skin elasticity cause a double chin. It is often difficult if not impossible to reduce double chin fat through diet and exercise alone, which is why many patients turn to Belkyra.

What is Belkyra?

Belkyra is a prescription medication that contains a synthetic form of a naturally occurring substance called deoxycholic acid as its active ingredient. Deoxycholic acid is a type of bile acid that your body naturally produces to help break down and absorb dietary fat for digestion. This injectable, non-surgical treatment dissolves subcutaneous fat cells below the chin for good by breaking down the cell membrane. Once injected, the cells are unable to store fat anymore. The body metabolizes the cellular debris within the following weeks through the lymphatic and circulatory systems. Belkyra treatments are low risk with some minor downtime.

Who is a Good Candidate for Belkyra?

Belkyra is intended for patients aged eighteen or over who have unwanted, resistant pockets of mild to moderate fat on the chin and neck areas that cause excessive fullness. Patients who have trouble swallowing, have active skin infections or other medical conditions in or near the injection site, are under the age of eighteen or are pregnant or breastfeeding should not have Belkyra. Belkyra may not always be advisable for patients who have had or are planning to have facial surgery.

Belkyra Injection Procedure Details

During your consultation for Belkyra, the health care provider will discuss your medical history including any previous facial cosmetic procedures you have had. Not much preparation is needed but it is recommended that you wash your face well prior to your appointment to reduce the risk of infection and avoid taking blood thinning medications for about one week before.

After the treatment area has been cleansed, a treatment grid is applied to the chin and neck area then the skin may be numbed with topical cream, ice, or lidocaine. This procedure involves multiple injections of Belkyra into targeted areas below the chin. Each session is completed within fifteen to twenty minutes. It is safe to resume your normal activities – except for exercise – immediately after the Belkyra procedure.

Results and Recovery from Belkyra

The most common side effects are temporary swelling usually lasting five to seven days, discomfort at the injection site, redness, bruising, and hardened tissue. Although the fat will not return once it has been dissolved and the results are lasting, the appearance of the chin area can be affected by future weight gain and aging. For some patients, multiple Belkyra treatments may be needed to maximize results.

Fillers can be used to improve the appearance of the lower face by lifting the cheeks, providing support for the jawline, and adding structure to the chin.

Botox® are Dysport® are injectable neurotoxins that reduce wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions such as frowning, smiling, and squinting. These injections can also re-shape or slim the jawline area.
