What is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified medicine that’s derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that occurs naturally in the environment. Its active ingredient is a diluted form of a neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin type A. When it is injected into certain facial muscles underlying the affected area, it blocks chemical signals from the nerves and as a result, the muscles are unable to contract. This has the effect of temporarily relaxing or “freezing” the muscles that cause wrinkles or forms of facial asymmetry, so the skin looks smoother.

Which Wrinkles Can Be Treated with Botox®?

The facial muscles are attached directly to the skin and during our facial expressions or movements, the skin is constantly being pulled in various directions as it is stretched to accommodate them. Youthful skin has an abundance of collagen and can easily snap back into position. However, as we age and levels of collagen drop, the creases begin to get deeper.

These are called dynamic wrinkles or expression wrinkles. They’re only visible during facial movements such as squinting, frowning, and smiling. These wrinkles may make you appear tired, angry, unapproachable, or upset when you’re not.

Botox® is primarily used for targeting moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles on the upper third of the face, such as the forehead and around the eyes. The most common areas include crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, glabellar lines (the vertical lines or 11s between the eyebrows), and horizontal forehead lines above the eyebrows. However, experienced practitioners use Botox® to treat other conditions as well. For example, it can be used to re-shape the face.

Who is a Good Candidate for Botox®?

The ideal candidate for Botox® would be a patient who has unwanted facial wrinkles that are caused by repetitive muscle contractions from habitual movements. It is intended for patients over the age of eighteen who are in good general health, have moderate to severe wrinkles and maintain realistic expectations for improvement.

Botox® is not recommended for patients who have allergies to ingredients contained in botulinum toxin injectables, have an active skin infection on the planned treatment area, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain nerve or muscle conditions, or have other severe illnesses or infections.

Botox® Injection Procedure Details

The procedure for Botox® and other similar botulinum toxin injections is usually simple and quick. It may take less than fifteen minutes to be completed. A very fine gauge needle is used to administer the medicine to the specific wrinkle-causing facial muscles. As the needle is so tiny and a numbing cream can be applied beforehand, injections are relatively painless.

Results and Recovery from Botox®

No downtime or recovery time is necessary after Botox®, so patients will be able to resume their normal activities right away with a few exceptions. Some minor, short-term side effects such as bruising, and swelling may occur on the injection site. Avoid rubbing your face on the treatment areas as it could cause the Botox® to migrate to other areas of the face that weren’t intended to be treated. It may take between three to five days for results to begin to show. The results last for three to four months.

Beyond Botox®: Other Options to Reduce Facial Wrinkles

Botox® is just one of the solutions available at Avebelle Cosmetic Clinic for minimizing wrinkles. Dysport® is a similar wrinkle relaxer injectable that works in the same way to temporarily minimize or eliminate facial wrinkles by preventing facial muscle contractions. It is formulated differently and tends to diffuse more, making it ideal for treating larger areas.

For other types of wrinkles that are caused by volume loss due to aging and environmental damage, injectable fillers are more appropriate. Biostimulatory fillers such as Radiesse® and Sculptra® promote the skin’s natural production of collagen to gradually reduce wrinkles and enhance its appearance.
