Habitual facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, and smiling eventually cause our skin to wrinkle in certain areas due to the repetitive stretching and creasing of the skin. Dysport® from Toronto’s Avebelle Cosmetic Clinic is a lesser-known injectable option for reducing wrinkles that are associated with repetitive expressions. This minimally invasive treatment can be used as an alternative to Botox®.

Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable medication that relaxes facial muscles. The primary ingredient in these injections, like Botox®, is a diluted form of a protein called botulinum toxin type A. This injectable works the same way to make skin smoother by preventing the contractions of facial muscles.
Once injected into specific muscles, it prevents chemical messages sent by the nerves from reaching them. When the muscles are temporarily relaxed, the skin on the surface appears smoother and more refreshed. Although these two neuromodulators are very similar and are used in the same way, there are some subtle differences between them because of how they are manufactured.
Dysport® is approved for moderate to severe wrinkles above the nose and between the eyebrows, on an area known as the glabella. These vertical wrinkles are called frown lines or “elevens.”
The skilled nurse injectors at Avebelle Cosmetic Clinic also use this injectable for other dynamic wrinkles and some forms of asymmetry on the face.
The ideal candidate for Dysport® would be a patient who has unwanted facial wrinkles that are caused by repetitive muscle contractions from habitual movements. It is intended for patients over the age of eighteen who are in good general health, have moderate to severe wrinkles, and maintain realistic expectations for improvement.
Patients who have become less responsive to Botox® may often find that Dysport® is more effective for them. The best choice for you all depends on your preference. Dysport® contains human albumin, lactose, and cow’s milk protein – so it’s not recommended for patients who have milk allergies.
Dysport® has a fast onset, with results appearing within just twenty-four hours in many cases, so it may be the better option for patients seeking last-minute treatments. Its effects last for three to four months on average.
There is no downtime or recovery time so patients can resume their usual activities. Some minor, temporary side effects such as bruising, and swelling may occur on the injection site. Avoid rubbing or placing pressure on your face on the injection site for four to six hours after treatment, as it could cause the medicine to diffuse to other areas of the face. It’s also best to avoid exercising for the first twenty-four hours.
Dysport® and Botox® from Avebelle Cosmetic Clinic are available for correcting expression wrinkles. For wrinkles that are formed due to other causes not related to repetitive facial muscle activity, such as collagen loss, injectable fillers are the more effective treatment. Hyaluronic acid facial fillers are soft gels that instantly volumize skin to reduce wrinkles or improve facial balance and symmetry.
Biostimulatory fillers such as Radiesse® and Sculptra® stimulate the skin’s natural production of collagen to gradually reduce wrinkles and improve skin fullness. Photofacial is a laser-based procedure that not only minimizes wrinkles but also addresses other texture and tone imperfections such as hyperpigmentation.
